Can accessory dwelling units help solve Utah’s housing crisis? Airbnb co-founder thinks so

Detatched residences could help improve access, affordability to real estate

Around 25% of the housing stock in Summit County is being used for short-term rentals, leaving community leaders debating how to tackle the housing shortage. But the co-founder of one of the most visited booking companies thinks he may have the solution.

Joe Gebbia created Airbnb in 2007 with a group of friends when they were trying to raise money to make rent in San Francisco. The short- and long-term rental company has since grown to more than 5 million hosts, who have helped at least 1.5 billion people find accommodations across the globe.

Gebbia was at Montage Deer Valley on Monday for the annual Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference to lead a discussion titled “How to put housing back on solid ground.” He emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address the nationwide housing shortage, and highlighted how his new company strives to disrupt the real estate market.
