Our Mission

About Utah Workforce Housing Advocacy

Let’s make it simple: We want to make sure future generations of Utahns can afford to buy a home in Utah.

The affordable housing crisis in Utah demands a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy that leverages lessons from other states, encourages innovation in zoning and development, and fosters collaboration among all stakeholders.

The UWHA is committed to leading this charge, advocating for policies that not only address the immediate housing shortage but also lay the groundwork for a future where every Utahn can afford to call this state home. Together, with the support and action of the Utah State Legislature and local governments, we can build a foundation for economic prosperity and community well-being that will stand the test of time.

Identified Challenges

  1. Rapid Population Growth: Utah's exceptional growth rate underscores the need for scalable and sustainable housing solutions.

  2. Housing Affordability Challenge: With housing costs outstripping income growth by a significant margin, many Utahns find themselves priced out of the housing market, affecting their quality of life and economic opportunities.

  3. Supply Shortage: A critical shortage of workforce housing is leading to increased commute times, environmental degradation, and a decline in the overall quality of life for Utah residents.

  4. Impact on Local Businesses: The housing affordability crisis is making it increasingly difficult for local businesses to attract and retain the workforce necessary for sustained economic growth.

What UWHA will target for potential solutions?

  1. Emulate Successful Models: Identify, research and recommend adopting of innovative approaches such as Oregon’s tax incentives and zoning reforms, alongside Montana’s collaborative task force model.

  2. Zoning Reform: Prioritize zoning strategies that will increase housing supply and create a variety of housing options and price points for Utah families.

  3. Incentives for Developers and Municipalities: Implement tax incentives and streamline development processes to encourage the provision of affordable housing units.

  4. Effective Utilization of Funding: Maximize the impact of HUD funds and explore additional state funding options for property acquisition and housing development.

  5. Bi-Partisan Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment across political lines to ensure the development of inclusive, effective housing policies.
